What counts as a large house number
Our custom numbers and letters come in 100mm, 150mm, 200mm, 300mm and 400mm. The first two are the sizes most people picture when they think of a standard house number. Anything from 200mm up starts to read as a deliberate design choice rather than just a label on a wall.
- 200mm, $95 a character. The middle ground. Bigger than a standard number, still modest on a narrow entry wall or a small pier.
- 300mm, $145 a character. The most popular large size. Clearly a feature, and it suits most rendered walls, fences and letterbox piers.
- 400mm, $175 a character. Our largest standard size. For double-storey facades, wide rendered walls, long driveways and street frontages set well back.

Choosing between 300mm and 400mm
The honest answer is that it depends on the wall, not on a rule. Two things settle it: how the height looks against your entry, and how wide the finished number will be once you have chosen a font.
Our height guide shows each height photographed against a door, which is the quickest way to judge scale against something you already know the size of. Then use the width calculator to work out the total width for your digits in your chosen font. A three-digit number at 400mm covers a lot of wall, and that calculation is what stops a surprise on install day.
Keep the number proportional to the space it sits in. A 400mm numeral on a narrow pier can look crowded, while a 200mm numeral on a wide rendered wall can disappear. One more thing worth knowing: the height you choose is the height of the numerals and uppercase letters. Lowercase letters are smaller within the font, so a name in mixed case will not measure the full height.
Fonts and finishes for large numbers
There are five fonts. Flinders, Merricks and Portsea are sleek and modern and sit well on contemporary renders, timber cladding and black weatherboard. Uppsala is more traditional and decorative, and suits period and federation frontages. See them all on the fonts page.
Five finishes are available, including matt black, matt white and matt gold. The current range is shown on the product page. At large sizes, contrast matters more than colour preference: matt black on a pale render, matt white on dark timber or charcoal brick, gold where you want warmth against a neutral wall. Whatever you pick, the finish carries across the full 8mm edge, so the number reads as one solid object from the street and from an angle.
How large numbers are fixed to the wall
Every number comes with threaded fixing rods and spacers, and paper installation templates. Larger numbers use extra rods and spacers, and those are included at no extra cost.
There are two ways to mount them. A flush mount sits the number directly on the wall. A floating mount stands it off the wall on the spacers so it casts a shadow line, which is the look people mean when they search for floating house numbers. Why solid aluminium outlasts cheaper numbers
If you are comparing prices against a hardware store or a department store number, the difference is what the number is made of. Thin pressed metal, painted plastic and acrylic all cost less up front. Outside, in full sun and rain, thin sections flex and fade, and acrylic and timber do not last well on a north-facing wall.

How big should house numbers be?
It depends on how far the number sits from the street and how much wall it has around it. Our 100mm and 150mm sizes are the standard house number range, 200mm is a step up, and 300mm and 400mm are the sizes people choose when they want the number to be a feature and to be read easily from the street.
